1841 1d Red A FU single, with four good-to-VERY LARGE margins, except just touched at NW corner, cancelled with a black Maltese Cross with a SMALL '1' IN CENTRE. Rockoff and Jackson ('The Encyclopaedia of the Maltese Cross', Vol.1, p.163) ascribe this to debris in the brass head of the obliterator. However this example is in exactly the same position and at the same angle as that illustrated by Alcock & Holland ('The Maltese Cross Cancellations of the United Kingdom', p.42), and described by Seymour & Gardiner-Hill ('The Postage Stamps of Great Britain', Part 1, p.65) as being in use at the 'West Central District Office' of London during 1843, a period which coincides with the use of Plate 35. A MISSING IMPRIMATUR, showing a FINE MAJOR RE-ENTRY, and also 1842-43 Ray Flaws. Cat.£130++. |
