1852 1d Reds Alph II

In early 1852, commencing with Plate 132, a new set of punches was introduced to insert the check-letters onto the plate: these are generally larger and heavier than the previous set, and are known as Alphabet II. These punches, with some minor variations, were used until the introduction of Alphabet III in late 1855. The imperf plates ran to Plate 177 (which is rare imperforate), and perforations were introduced in early 1854.
Note: the letters 'CV' after a title indicate not only minor 'Constant Varieties' (blurs, partially recut frames etc), but also more significant varieties, such as Re-entries, Double Letters, Inverted 'S' etc. The actual nature of the variety will be found by accessing the full details of each item.
